Lumbar Osteoarthritis

Lumbar Osteoarthritis

Lumbar osteoarthritis causes mild-severe low back pain, stiffness, joint locking and muscle spasms. Occasionally complications can occur that generate symptoms like pins & needles, weakness and numbness into the leg. It develops gradually and you are likely to have had low back pain on and off over a few years. Characteristically pain and stiffness levels are worse in the morning relieved by getting up and moving for an hour or two however the pain and stiffness will start to return by the evening. Gentle exercise and moving around helps relief pain levels as does heat or cold packs. Any prolonged static postures or rigorous activity aggravates pain levels. It most commonly develops with the over 50 age group however can happen as early as 20 years old.

Cervicogenic Headache

Cervicogenic Headache

A cervicogenic headache is the medical term to describe head pain that is caused by an injury to the neck, shoulders or upper back. Any sustained spasm or strain to the neck muscles or sprain to the spinal joints in the neck can create a cervicogenic headache. The headache will feel like a general intense pounding ache around the prominent points of the temple, forehead or skull. The pain is constant and made worse by movements of the neck and shoulders or sitting in prolonged awkward postures. Neck stiffness will be prominent in most cases of cervicogenic headaches leading to a loss in neck mobility. This type of headache is very common in office workers and many find their headache develops over the course of the day being worse in the evening and easing with rest.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is the medical term for tissue damage to and inflammation of the plantar fascia. It is the most common cause of heel pain with a reported 10%of the population having suffered from the condition in their lifetime.

Symptoms include a dull ache and stiffness along the sole of the foot that tends to be localised to the underside of the heel. This stiffness and ache tends to be at its most intense after long periods of rest or during the first steps in the morning.

Jaw Pain - TMJ Disorders

Jaw Pain - TMJ Disorders

There are three main categories of TMJ (jaw) conditions. Myofascial pain (the most common), injury to the joint causing a dislocated jaw or locked jaw and conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The most commonly related factor in jaw conditions is teeth clenching and grinding medically referred to as bruxism. Symptoms include a dull ache around the jaw which is often accompanied by a sharp pain on chewing movements. Ear pain and headaches are also common related symptoms.

Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric bursitis most commonly occurs as a result of injury associated with repetitive strenuous activity that encourages the gluteal muscles and their tendons which attach to the greater trochanter of the hip to tighten and shorten from overuse (like repetitive road running). These factors put more pressure over the bursa, irritating it and triggering a painful inflammatory reaction (swelling).

Symptoms normally include a constant dull ache or burning pain over the hip joint, which is aggravated by any movement, pressure or touch. Movement of the hip will be stiff, especially in the morning and after any activity. The hip pain will often radiate down the side of the leg towards the knee and in some cases around into the groin and buttocks. In cases of bursitis caused by infection the skin around the affected joint will appear red and will feel incredibly warm to the touch. Additional symptoms are a high temperature and feverish chills.

Thoracic Facet Sprain - Mid Back Sprain

Thoracic Facet Sprain - Mid Back Sprain

A thoracic facet sprain or strain happens suddenly after an excessive or harsh movement. It causes stiffness and a sharp burning pain that can radiate down into the lower back and up into the neck. Twisting from side to side, flexing forward and extending back will aggravate pain levels as will sitting slouched in one position for too long. Ice packs, gentle movements and anti-inflammatory medication help to relief the pain levels. It is common to not feel the pain and stiffness after the sprain and waking the next day to severe pain and stiffness.

Rotator Cuff Strain - Shoulder Strain

Rotator Cuff Strain - Shoulder Strain

A rotator cuff strain involves a tear or partial tearing of one or more of the rotator cuff muscles causing pain in and around the shoulder. A rotator cuff strain is a common injury and effects people of all ages. It is often seen in individuals who partake in a lot of throwing sports in particular javelin throwing, cricket and tennis. A strain may also be caused by overuse from activities such as repetitive work tasks, like cleaning or lifting heavy objects, working with arms stretch overhead or strong pulling and pushing activities.

Symptoms include a sudden sharp burning pain, initially concentrated in and around the shoulder. In some cases a tearing or snapping noise is heard during the injury. In severe cases a strain will mean that the individual or athlete is unable to continue. The tear or rupture will be accompanied by severe swelling and bruising that will be incredibly tender to touch.

Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Low Back

Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Low Back

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a relatively common condition affecting three times more women than men and normally developing between the ages of 40 to 50, although it can affect people at any age. RA has the ability to develop in any joint of the body but most commonly it affects the hands and feet. Spinal RA is less common.

Symptoms begin as joint and muscle stiffness, particularly in the early mornings with symptoms starting to ease 2-3 hours after getting up. After a few weeks the same joints that have been stiff may become painful and swollen. The pain will feel like a deep throbbing ache that is aggravated by rest and certain levels of activity. The swelling levels during a flare up also cause the skin around the spine to be extremely tender and slightly warm to the touch.
