Osteoarthritis in the Wrist & Hand
Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disorder that is also referred to as joint degeneration but you will probably have heard most people use the term "joint wear & tear".
Symptoms initially start as mild wrist & hand pain and stiffness. The pain is likely to feel generalized rather than a pin point pain location. Gradually as the joint becomes more and more degenerated the joint pain symptoms will be coupled by intense stiffness leading to severe stiffness and painful joint locking.
A hook of hamate fracture is the term used for a break in the hook portion of the hamate bone in the wrist. This type of fracture most commonly occurs from repetitive micro-trauma during certain sports including golf, hockey and baseball.
Symptoms include a very intense immediate sharp pain around the fracture site, along the outside of the wrist under the pinkie finger. The palm will be tender to touch and there will be mild bruising and swelling and painful weakened hand grip strength.
A scaphoid fracture is the term used for a break in the scaphoid bone in the wrist. It is the most common carpal bone to fracture due to its larger size and location.
Symptoms include a very intense immediate sharp pain around the fracture site at the side of the wrist under the thumb that often radiates up into the forearm and across into the rest of the hand. There will be swelling and bruising around wrist and the pain levels will be aggravated by most hand or wrist movements making weight bearing and gripping with the effected hand very painful.
