Lumbar Facet Sprain (Low Back Sprain)

Lumbar Facet Sprain (Low Back Sprain)

A lumbar facet sprain or strain happens suddenly after an excessive or harsh movement. It causes stiffness and a sharp burning pain that can radiate down into the buttocks and up into the mid back. Going from sitting to standing, twisting, flexing forward and extending back will aggravate pain levels as will sitting slouched in one position for too long. Ice packs, gentle movements and anti-inflammatory medication help to relief the pain levels. It is common to not feel the pain and stiffness after the sprain and waking the next day to severe pain and stiffness.

Lumbar Disc Herniation - Slipped Disc in the Low Back

Lumbar Disc Herniation - Slipped Disc in the Low Back

A lumbar disc herniation often causes severe low back pain. The disc often presses on a nerve root which also causes pain and other symptoms like pins & needles, weakness and numbness into the leg. Actions like sneezing, coughing, lifting, bending forward and to the side aggravate pain levels. Characteristically there is a sudden onset of pain, possibly after trauma with the likelihood of prior low back complaints. It most commonly develops within the 25-50 year old age range with the highest incidence between 35-45 years. In most cases, the symptoms ease off gradually over several weeks.

Lumbar Osteoarthritis

Lumbar Osteoarthritis

Lumbar osteoarthritis causes mild-severe low back pain, stiffness, joint locking and muscle spasms. Occasionally complications can occur that generate symptoms like pins & needles, weakness and numbness into the leg. It develops gradually and you are likely to have had low back pain on and off over a few years. Characteristically pain and stiffness levels are worse in the morning relieved by getting up and moving for an hour or two however the pain and stiffness will start to return by the evening. Gentle exercise and moving around helps relief pain levels as does heat or cold packs. Any prolonged static postures or rigorous activity aggravates pain levels. It most commonly develops with the over 50 age group however can happen as early as 20 years old.

Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric Bursitis

Trochanteric bursitis most commonly occurs as a result of injury associated with repetitive strenuous activity that encourages the gluteal muscles and their tendons which attach to the greater trochanter of the hip to tighten and shorten from overuse (like repetitive road running). These factors put more pressure over the bursa, irritating it and triggering a painful inflammatory reaction (swelling).

Symptoms normally include a constant dull ache or burning pain over the hip joint, which is aggravated by any movement, pressure or touch. Movement of the hip will be stiff, especially in the morning and after any activity. The hip pain will often radiate down the side of the leg towards the knee and in some cases around into the groin and buttocks. In cases of bursitis caused by infection the skin around the affected joint will appear red and will feel incredibly warm to the touch. Additional symptoms are a high temperature and feverish chills.

Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Low Back

Rheumatoid Arthritis in the Low Back

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a relatively common condition affecting three times more women than men and normally developing between the ages of 40 to 50, although it can affect people at any age. RA has the ability to develop in any joint of the body but most commonly it affects the hands and feet. Spinal RA is less common.

Symptoms begin as joint and muscle stiffness, particularly in the early mornings with symptoms starting to ease 2-3 hours after getting up. After a few weeks the same joints that have been stiff may become painful and swollen. The pain will feel like a deep throbbing ache that is aggravated by rest and certain levels of activity. The swelling levels during a flare up also cause the skin around the spine to be extremely tender and slightly warm to the touch.

Femoral Fracture - Broken Leg

Femoral Fracture - Broken Leg

A Leg fracture is a term for a fracture or break to the femur bone (Thigh bone). Leg fractures are most commonly seen in the younger population and are normally the result of high impact trauma like car or motorcycle accidents including a pedestrian being hit by a car and severe falls.

The trauma causes a very intense immediate sharp pain around the fracture site this pain can radiate up into the groin and down into the knee. The fracture is often accompanied by swelling and bruising and aggravated by most movements this makes weight bearing and walking excruciating.
