Rotator Cuff Strain - Shoulder Strain

Rotator Cuff Strain - Shoulder Strain

A rotator cuff strain involves a tear or partial tearing of one or more of the rotator cuff muscles causing pain in and around the shoulder. A rotator cuff strain is a common injury and effects people of all ages. It is often seen in individuals who partake in a lot of throwing sports in particular javelin throwing, cricket and tennis. A strain may also be caused by overuse from activities such as repetitive work tasks, like cleaning or lifting heavy objects, working with arms stretch overhead or strong pulling and pushing activities.

Symptoms include a sudden sharp burning pain, initially concentrated in and around the shoulder. In some cases a tearing or snapping noise is heard during the injury. In severe cases a strain will mean that the individual or athlete is unable to continue. The tear or rupture will be accompanied by severe swelling and bruising that will be incredibly tender to touch.

Osteoarthritis in the Shoulder

Osteoarthritis in the Shoulder

Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative disorder that is also referred to as joint degeneration but you will probably have heard most people use the term "joint wear & tear".

Symptoms initially start as mild shoulder pain and stiffness. The pain is likely to feel generalized rather than a pin point pain location. Gradually as the joint becomes more and more degenerated the joint pain symptoms will be coupled by intense stiffness leading to severe stiffness and painful joint locking.

Upper Arm Fracture - Broken Arm

Upper Arm Fracture - Broken Arm

An arm fracture or broken arm is the term for any break in the humerus bone also known as the upper arm bone. Arm fractures are normally the result from a direct traumatic impact to the arm or from traumatic falls. Symptoms include an intense immediate sharp pain around the fracture site that radiates up into the shoulder and neck and down into the forearm and hand. The fracture is often accompanied by swelling and bruising and in certain cases there will be obvious bone deformity.

Dislocated shoulder

Dislocated shoulder

A dislocated shoulder is the term to describe the displacement of the humeral head (top of the arm) from the shoulder joint; in essence it is when the shoulder has popped out of its socket. They are normally the result of traumatic falls or impacts against the shoulder.

Symptoms will include a sudden and severe pain around the shoulder joint and down into the arm. There will most likely have been a pop or tearing noise at the time of dislocation. The arm will feel limp and weak and any movement of the arm will aggravate the already intense pain levels.
